Bare or Bear? 15 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 13
HIIIII

I couldn't help but be absolutely confused over this.

Over my childhood, I've been using "Bear" as in, bearing a heavy burden.

But now when I look at it... O_O it just doesn't seem right?

But when I use "Bare", I'll only use it as "her feet is bare"

If I remember correctly, in my elementary school, my teacher used "bear" as in to carry, or to hold onto a burden or object.

Is that one of the many "Lies My Teachers Told Me" ?

So, if I want to say the phrase, "Too heavy to xxxx"

Which one should I use? Bare or Bear?

(Sorry, it's just that I'm horrible when it comes to grammar)

As I have always understood it 'bare' is to refer to nudity or in revealing something, such as: "The woman pulled away her sock, baring a stark white foot."

As for 'bear', I have used it in all other manners except those described above.

From my handy dandy Webster's pocket dictionary

bare- (a)naked, exposed, empty, mere
(v)uncover

bear-(n)1. large heavy mammal (2) rude, rough person
(v)bore, borne or born (1) carry, (2) have or show, (3) give birth, (4)produce
(5)permit, (6) endure

Either way, it always looks wrong to me, so I've looked it up repeatedly. Now I tell myself, the only time the spelling should be "bare" is when referring to nakedness. That way I don't compulsively check the spelling yet again...

=O

"Bare" is related to nudity.. (nods) I understand now.

But how would we use the word "Bear" in a sentence (other than the animal bear)?

I realized I used this word several times, and I really don't know the meaning of it, or how to use it O_O

As mentioned 'bear' can be used in the sense of a burden, or carrying something.

"The weight was too much to bear."
"He grunted as he slung the bag over his shoulder, bearing the weight on his back."
