A Dream Come True by Riku Ryuu
Chapter 1
I do not own Cinderella, of which this is based on. I've been wanting to try this for some time and hopefully it will get me to write more.
Enjoy!

Once upon a time…
Kagome looked down at the envelope in her hands, fear and hope warring in her chest, each wanting to take over her body and push away all reason. It was a simple white envelope that didn’t seem to have more than a single sheet of paper within, but Kagome wasn’t sure if that was good or bad. The outside was the normal white with her address in neat cursive in the middle. The thing that caused her such feelings was the return address in the corner; Grandmother’s School for Godmothers.
Up until a few weeks ago, Kagome had been going to the school every day for three years. With the final exam done, a written test along with a magic test, all of the third year students had been sent home to await the result. The weeks of waiting had been filled with horrifying thoughts of familiar doubts and the expressions of the other students if they found out she had failed. You would think a bunch of older women, the grandmotherly types, would be nice to everyone. If you were barely eighteen and taking the godmother test you would learn differently.
Kagome had put up with the teasing and the sour looks without comment. There were no age restrictions for being a godmother so she knew she was not the one in the wrong. It was only natural that the other women would feel threatened by a younger woman trying to take their job. If the letter was one of acceptance, Kagome would be the youngest fairy godmother since the beginning of time.
Unknown to Kagome, the other students were mostly upset by her looks. While the oldest woman in the class had skin covered in wrinkles and blotchy with age, Kagome’s skin shined with health and was clear of blemishes. The others had dyed their hair all different colors but they all knew that silver lurked beneath and it was all a matter of time until they had to dye it again or let the silver show through. Kagome’s hair was a smooth waterfall of blue-black down her back that made envy rise in even the nicest old lady because they knew it was nothing less than natural. Her clear blue eyes and young, slim body added up with everything else to make Kagome a rare beauty. No matter how nice her personality was, none of her peers wanted anything to do with her.
With her patience wearing thin, Kagome quickly ran up the stairs to her apartment. She hurried to unlock her door before pressing inside of her small, hopefully temporary, home.
The front room was small but well kept. One would first think that the occupant took a great deal of time cleaning it, and then they would notice there was really nothing to clean. All the little hints of a person’s personality that were usually left all over the house were absent here. It was as if it was a model house, unlived in and waiting for someone to occupy it. It was a place to stay for Kagome until she passed the test and was given someone to help. This was a place to sleep and a mailing address for her test results to be sent to.
Kagome sat down on her simple couch and carefully slipped her finger under the edge of the envelope to tear it open. Once the letter was free, she slipped it out and unfolded it, heart in her throat. Fear was rising over her hope and threatening to overtake her whole body. What would she do if the letter said she had failed? She would have to go back for another year of training, another year of waiting, another year of laughter and unkind words and feeling all alone. With fear a living, thrashing thing inside of her, Kagome began to read.
“Dear Ms. Higurashi, it is a pleasure to accept you into the ranks of the Fairy Godmothers United…”
Kagome brought the letter to her chest with a happy laugh, a relieved laugh. Her fear died a quick death and hope was replaced by happiness. It was official; she was a Fairy Godmother now. All her dreams had come true and now it was time to help others have the same chance as she.
She held the letter out again and continued to read.
“Your first godchild will be Kikyo Taijiya.”
