It Happened on Drabble Night by naqaashi

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha.

A/N: The theme was MAGIC. This time, I attempted an interconnected set - gawd knows how it's turned out. I was aiming for an omelette, but I think I got them scrambled instead.

Prompt – Illusion

Oval face, pointed chin, almond eyes, straight nose, firm lips. She smiled, faintly vain, at the pretty face that stared back from the mirror. It was a little rounder; and the eyes were blue, not brown. But the chill of growing bleakness in them spoke of her increasing resemblance to the other girl. She wondered, then, how long it would take for the transformation to complete, when there was truly nothing to distinguish the sisters, nothing to stop him granting her the same love he did to her doppelganger. She smiled briefly, bitterly, shattering the illusion, solidifying it just a little more into reality.

Prompt – Gold

“I spy,” she muttered under her breath. Observing how he looked at the girl perched on his lap, the sparking glow in his eyes. Her gaze sharpened on the girl; if she squinted a little, she could swear it was herself in his arms. Her spine tingled at the fantasy, and she acknowledged cursing gratitude to their likeness.

“Stalking again?”

She stiffened at the cool baritone of the elder brother of the man she loved – and stalked. She didn’t turn to look at him, to see the differences between the brothers, contrasting sharply against the clone-like sisters. Or to see the sunset flash gold into his contemplative stare, resting on her back, amplifying the tingles.

Prompt – Aura

He raised a brow as she marched past him. A slender thread of expensive perfume trailed in her wake, a sharp aroma of spice and musk.

“Did you steal that from her drawers, little mirror?” he taunted her with angry pleasure.

She considered her options, then decided on the truth. “Yes.”

“Hn. Such a lucky man, my little brother is. To have such pains taken for him. But he’ll never love you, little mirror.”

He watched the sickness unfurling in her aura as she twisted a hard smile at him, narrowing his eyes at the grasping desperation in her voice. “Soon, he will.”

Prompt – Enchant

“Stalking the stalker, huh,” she mocked, tone sing-song, posture inviting.

His eyes swept over her, lingering at the right places, acknowledging the bait, and his amusement at it. “Frustration taking its toll?” he questioned, canting his head towards the couple twined around each other – pressing soft kisses, murmuring incoherent words of affection. “I hope he’ll be worth the wait.”

She crooked a finger with slinky menace, beckoning him closer. “So will I,” she breathed into his ear, eyes aglow with secret desire.

“Enchanting confidence,” he murmured back. “But I refuse to be target practice.”

Prompt – Ritual

She would bump into him, in cafes, in clubs, in the garden. Dressed in a copy of her twin’s wardrobe, face made up to maturity she didn’t have, gait almost, but not quite, predatory. And the same hateful smirk on lips painted a deep scarlet.

She was impressive tonight, he noted, observing the black silk swish around her knees and cling to her hips in simulation of a lover’s embrace. She would sidle up to him, he knew, all fluttering lashes and tempting femininity. He would hesitate, as if accepting her unspoken invitation, and then leave her to stew in mortification, plotting the next encounter, scheming for successful seduction.

It was almost a ritual, this macabre dance of hearts she was drawing him into.

Prompt – Dazzle

Something wasn’t right, he mused, scrutinizing her from chignon-ed head to pointy-heeled toe, and coming to a wincing halt at her gaze. Her leery, smoldering, vicious, brown gaze.

She tilted her lips a notch wider, dazzled at the fury blazing to life in his face, breaking its aristocratic planes into a semblance of animal reaction.

“So, tonight the image walks out the mirror,” he remarked, sliding his eyes in the direction of the man she desired.

She followed his line of vision, breath escaping in a slow hiss. “Half an hour” – and so she took up his silent, cruel challenge.

“In that case, I hope I may congratulate you soon, on hearing him scream her name in the passion you gift him.” He turned away, savage pleasure ripping through him at the creeping dismay on her face at that forgotten threat to her pilfered happiness.

Prompt – Mystic

He cast a curious glance at her as she walked in, wondering if he would even recognize her, or if she had finally become the woman who’s existence she envied, and found himself speechless.

Breezy in a pastel sundress and unruly hair, she returned his disbelieving umber look with a strangely mystic blankness in her own blue stare.

“I want to hear my name…” she trailed off, taut with despair and terrifyingly fragile hope.

He watched her edges collapse, and waited, an eyebrow raised in encouragement.

“….from you.”

Prompt – Magic

So presumptuous, he mused. Asking for a different ending, when she barely had herself to give in return. And that she had ruined in mad pursuit of a man possessed by a sister she unfortunately resembled far too closely, in looks and desires.

And yet, he admitted, he could not deny the magic of such want. To be someday yearned for so deeply, perhaps too deeply…

So he let his arms circle her waist, and his lips make love to hers, as he led her upstairs with every intention of saying her name till she never again forgot who she was.

Reviews make me very happy, indeed!
