She could feel it pulsing in her hands. The famed Shikon no Tama was now back into her possession. Surveying the bloody battlefield around her, anger, sadness and relief swept through her decaying form. It was here, on this earth, that she would die with her beloved. Her incarnate gave her that much. Pulling her eyes away from Inuyasha's crumpled form, she spotted the girl, Kagome. She was heaving heavily, her own blood choking her as she gurgled. She, out of all of them, had sacrificed the most. She, who did not even belong in their time, gave her life to protecting it from the grasps of pure evil. She gave up her love for her, Kikyo. Her eyes tendered at that throught.

"You have given me much, Kagome, and for that, I will give you what we have taken away, your life. But moreso, I will give you what Inuyasha wanted, so you could live for both of us the lives we wanted to live. Be happy, Kagome. And thank you," Kikyo breathed, facing the dying girl.

As the wish came true, the Shikon erupted into a shower of bright sparks, forever disappearing. Kagome's body was enveloped in a ball of light. As it disappated, a shimmering barrier surrounded her. And at that sight, Kikyo crumbled onto the ground next to Inuyasha.

"I love you..." she murmured as she let death take her once more.

      That night, it rained.

The dull burn throughout her body awoke her from unconscousness. Her body felt like she was being pulled and stretched to a milliion different directions all at once. She dully noted that she felt her hair long past where it would normally be, splayed out beneath her, and that she could smell the burn of smoke in her nostrils. Eyes opening, Kagome opened her eyes to see the dull sunlight from the evening sun begin to fade. The light exposed the wasteland that stood in the wake of their ultimate battle. Here Naraku had been slain, of that she was sure. And here, here entire band of friends died. But here she was, breathing, alert...alive.

Panic rushed through her veins. Shooting straight up to a standing position, Kagome ran over to the closest body, that of her tiny infant ward, Shippo. His body was drenched in blood, his blood, she somehow knew. It was torn up in so many different places that it hardly resembled a body. Tears welled up in her eyes. She loved Shippo like her own son. He was her family...her child. And now he was dead.

A red tint lined the edge of her vision, 'Probably because of the blood...' she thought dully as she walked over to where Miroku and Sango were.

Their bodies had been in the same shape as Shippo's was, but the wounds were more severe. A gaping hole sunk into Sango's abdomen, the entirety of that hole missing completely. Miroku's body suffered a large gash from his right shoulder diagonally to his left hip. Both of their bodies were seeping blood, and Kagome could feel her nose prickle at the slight tinge of decay laced with the blood smell.

She went along her trail to find Inuyasha and Kikyo together, dead. A tear dripped down her face as she finally collapsed to her knees. Her best friend, her Inuyasha was now dead. His throat sliced open, and a jagged hole piercing his chest where his heart would have been. Kikyo was nothing more than clay and bones splayed across his chest, but somehow it seemed fitting. Kagome had long ago given up any idea of being wth Inuyasha. She had wanted him to be happy, and since Kikyo was the one in his life first, she would have him. She was happy that way, seeing Inuyasha and Kikyo act as true lovers did when it was young love, and in truth, she only envied their relationship. But now...they were dead, and she was the only one there alive. She was left behind by death, to be the living memorial of her family's death. She had no where else to go, the well had been destroyed in a previous battle against Naraku. So no, Feudal Japan was her home.

But what kind of home had no family? Not one she could live in. Letting her pent up emotions go, she uttered a soul-shattering scream. It rang true throughout the forest. It rang as a testiment of her anguish, of her lost, of her sadness. And as she let out the final breath of her scream, she collapsed, exhaustion and emotonal distress getting the best of her.

The rain came again that night.

Sesshoumaru was patrolling his borders. As it was, stately affairs were all in order, and a life behind a desk bored him. So he chose to travel and protect what was his. His land was his only obligation, the only thing he valued more than hmself.

It was during one of these patrols that he heard the most blood-curdling scream he had ever heard uttered. Eyes flashing a tint of crimson, Sesshoumaru summon his ki cloud and drifted off towards the origin of the scream. It was near the northern border of his lands, and any danger in his land was to be dealt with immediately.

Upon arrival, he surveyed a desolate terrain of blood and miasma. Littered about were the participants of the battles, youkai and humans alike. But at the very heart of the field was what he came for.

Breathing ruggedly upon a heap of dead bodies was a young demoness with hair as dark as the night itself. He picked her up and noticed she bore the stunningly similar regal markings of his clan. Pulling her completely into his arms he froze as he saw what was underneath her. There, lying in his own cold blood was his half-brother. A mental shock locked him in place, and for a while he could not remember why he was there. All he could see was his brother, mutilated, dead.

Placing the demoness down, he scouted about the destroyed clearing a bit more, stumbling upon the rotting body of Naraku. So, his brother had succeeded. Knowing what had to be done, Sesshoumaru rolled up his sleeves and started digging into the earth. Though he might not have love nor known those of his brother's group or his brother himself, he respected what they had done and their sacrifices. A proper burial was all he could give, and give he would.

He worked hard into the night, not stopping until the last of the bodies were set in place and buried peacefully. Then, carefully, he picked up the youkai onna and departed for his castle. That night, he noted again, the rain came.

Okay, so it's really short, but I was short on time too. Please please please review if you can, if not I hope you at least enjoyed this part!
