I Do
Taking in a deep breath, Kagome couldn't calm the butterflies in her stomach. She felt like a mess. It was finally here. The day she would marry the man of her dreams. Resisting the urge to chew on her bottom lip, she didn't want to ruin the lipstick that had been carefully applied. Holding still, the light tugging on her head kept her from fidgeting. The village women helping her whispered quietly amongst themselves, pleased and honored to be able to help the Shikon Miko on her wedding day.
Soft laughter made her blush. Catching the end of the conversation, Kagome wondered if what the women said was true. She hadn't given much thought about the potential anatomy differences between her and her future husband. He was half human so she had just assumed that everything would be the same. The only difference she had ever noticed were his ears. While she had caught accidental glimpses of him naked once or twice, she hadn't wanted to see him and really didn't remember any specifics.
Would he really be that much bigger than a human male? She didn't recall him being huge or even a strange shape as they said, but then again, she really was trying to just look away as quickly as possible. Sucking in a deep breath, she tried to convince herself that it would be fine. She was a modern girl after all. She had heard it all. Eri and Yuka talked a lot about their boyfriends and the things that they'd tried with them. It was embarrassing hearing about it at the time, but now she would try to use what they had said for her benefit. She didn't want to be a disappointment to Inuyasha after all.
Feeling the women place a final comb in her hair, she sucked in a deep breath. Ohs and ahs met her ears along with several compliments on how beautiful she looked. She only wished that she could see the results herself, but mirrors were a luxury that the village couldn't afford. Feeling the wataboshi placed gently on her head, she knew that her outfit was complete.
Standing slowly, she allowed the women to adjust her shiromuku to remove whatever invisible wrinkles they saw. Once they were done, several left the hut to inform Kaede and Miroku that she was ready.
Leaving the hut slowly, Kagome carefully stepped off the porch and onto the main village road. Walking slowly towards shrine where the ceremony would be held, Kagome tried not to look at the villagers lining the street. They bowed to her in reverence, making her cheeks flush a light pink. A small smile parted her lips when she spied the red clad man standing at the bottom of the shine steps. Approaching him slowly, she felt her cheeks flush when he held a hand out to her and smiled.
Taking it, a large smile parted her lips as well. Walking up the long steps to the shrine, Inuyasha moved slowly so she could keep pace. Making it to the top step, her stomach knotted all over again. Outside the shrine Keade and Miroku were waiting for them.
Kneeling carefully in front of the pair, Kagome was secretly glad for the pillow provided for her. It would have been a shame to get her white shiromuku dirty. Lowering her head, she closed her eyes as Miroku started the ceremony. Blessing and purifying them, Kagome listened intently to the words being said. Feeling a tear slip past her closed eyes, she wished her mother, brother and grandfather could be there. Not even Sango was present due to the resent birth of her son, but Kagome didn't hold it against the slayer. While having all of her family and friends there was preferable, it wasn't the most important thing.
She was admittedly shocked when Inuyasha had asked her to marry him. While she had hoped that they would marry at some point, she hadn't expected it to be so soon. Smiling softly, she still remembered how flustered and nervous he seemed. He was constantly looking around. His eyes shifting and his ears twitching constantly, like he expected to be interrupted at any minute. Of course she said yes immediately. He was the sole reason she returned through the well after all. She was surprised by how quickly he wanted the ceremony to take place as well, but dismissed it without a thought. Sango had mentioned how distraught he was after her disappearance and probably just didn’t want to risk her disappearing again.
Picking up her branch from the scared sakaki tree, she saw Inuyasha pick up his as well. About to place the offering down, an unnatural wind whipped through the area, nearly knocking the wataboshi off her head. Gasping, she clutched the sakaki branch to her chest and glanced over her shoulder as Inuyasha leapt to his feet snarling.
Standing under the red tori gate was Sesshomaru. Not a hair was out of place, but his aura was fluctuating menacingly and his eyes were as cold as ice. Behind him was a female yokai she had never seen before. Silver hair flowed down her back in waves and amber eyes sparkled beautifully. The white kimono she wore was stunning and fit her shape perfectly.
“Hello, little brother,” Sesshomaru growled.
“Sesshomaru, what the hell!” Inuyasha shot back.
A sculpted eyebrow rose, disappearing behind trimmed bangs. “This one believes that should be his question, hanyou.” Amber eyes shifted towards the still kneeling miko before moving back towards his idiot brother. “You intended to go back on your word, Inuyasha.”
Gritting his teeth, Inuyasha growled, “Not here, Sesshomaru.”
“Yes, here,” Sesshomaru sneered. “There is no reason to wait. You are prepared to wed and so you shall, as agreed upon.”
“Inuyasha,” Kagome whispered, he stomach churning into knots. “What is he talking about?”
Opening his mouth, he wasn't able to respond. Sesshomaru promptly replied, “A year after your disappearance, miko, this Sesshomaru approached the whelp.”
“Shut up, Sesshomaru!” Inuyasha barked.
“Why, Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru sneered. “Is it because you did not mention that you are betrothed to someone else. That you agreed to marry another in her absence.”
Gasping, Kagome slowly stood. It couldn't be true. “Inuyasha,” she whispered, her voice wobbling.
“Kagome, I can explain!” Inuyasha said.
A lone tear slid down her cheek. Glancing at the beautiful yokai woman standing silently behind Sesshomaru, Kagome's heart ached. The white kimono made sense now. It was a wedding garb. While not the traditional cut of a human wedding kimono, the purpose was still clear. Kagome's hands fell to her side limply and the sakaki branch fell to the ground. Staring at the slippers covering her feet, she mumbled softly, “Excuse me.”
Without looking up she walked away from the shrine. Watching her go, Inuyasha cursed under his breath. Making to follow her, Bakusaiga's blade appeared before him, stopping his progress. Growling at Sesshomaru, he snapped, “Back off, bastard! I'm going after Kagome!”
“The miko is no longer your concern, Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru stated calmly.
“The hell she ain't!” Inuyasha snarled.
With a deft kick to the back of the knees, Sesshomaru brought Inuyasha to the ground. Tossing him back to the alter, he ignored the shocked reactions of the two humans present. Without a word, the female yokai knelt gracefully on the pillow that was once occupied by the miko. Picking up the discarded sakaki branch, she waited patiently.
Eying the human male, Sesshomaru held his brother down, and stated calmly, “Continue, monk.”
Clearing his throat, Miroku said, “Um, Lord Sesshomaru, forgive me, but I'm not sure that this is-”
Cutting him off, Sesshomaru said, “Should you refuse to preform the ceremony, then this one will be forced to tell your mate that she will need to find another to beget more whelps from.”
Violet eyes widened, and clearing his throat, Miroku stuttered, “Should I start from the beginning, then?”
“Continue where you left off,” Sesshomaru said, putting more weight onto Inuyasha's back.
Nodding, Miroku continued the ceremony, all the while casting dubious glances at Inuyasha. His hanyou friend struggled beneath his brother's hold but was no match for the daiyokai. When it came time for the sake, Sesshomaru held his brother's head up and forced him to drink from the cups as was expected.
Frowning, Miroku watched the scene with sad eyes. He wanted to go find Kagome, but couldn't until the ceremony was finished. He would not leave until he was dismissed, lest Sesshomaru turn his ire on his family. Loosely tying the red ribbon around the yokai and his friend's hands, Miroku took a step back. Lady Kaede had already left, most likely to find Kagome, but he was anxious to go as well.
Bowing to Sesshomaru, Miroku said, “My lord, if that is all.”
Pulling Inuyasha to his feet, Sesshomaru kept a firm hold of the hanyou. “You stupid prick!” Inuyasha yelled, “Get off me already!”
Maintaining his hold on the whelp, Sesshomaru shifted his eyes towards the female, and said, “Lady Sayuri, mark him now. He can give you your mark later.”
Bowing her head, Sayuri leaned closer to her new husband, and pulling the lapel away from his neck, bit into the tender skin near the juncture of his shoulder. Screaming, Inuyasha struggled for only a moment before going limp in his brother's hold. Releasing the whelp, he scanned the area to find the monk had already left. It was of no matter. His usefulness was done.
Hearing a thump, Sesshomaru's eyes shifted back towards the hanyou now sitting on the ground. A look of defeat crossed his feature, but it was not his issue. “I leave the hanyou to you,” Sesshomaru stated blandly.
Bowing, Sayuri replied softly, “My lord.”

Wiping the tears from her eyes, Kagome stopped in a familiar sun drenched clearing. She hadn't meant to go to the well. She hadn't even paid attention to where she was going. Her feet took her there automatically without her consent. Staring at the worn well, she moved slowly over to it. Staring into the dark depths, a tear dripped from her face into the abyss below. Why had this happened? Why wasn't she enough? Hadn't she done enough? Why did the kami's like messing with her?
Was three years really too long to expect him to wait? Although, according to Sesshomaru, he had only waited one. She had been faithful the whole time. Sure, she had no idea if the well would open again, but she was willing to give it more than a year. It was true, even her resolve was starting to waiver. She still checked on it, but not as frequently as she had in the beginning. She had even silently given herself a limit when she would give up on the well ever opening again. Now, with that said, it was far longer than three years.
“Kagome, child,” a rough voice stated behind her. Straightening, Kagome turned slowly. Her eyes were swollen and tears still dripped down her cheeks. Frowning, Kaede stepped closer, and asked, “How are ye fairing?”
Sniffing, a wane smile parted Kagome's lips. “As well as I can be, I guess,” she whispered.
“What will ye do?” Kaede asked, honestly curious.
Shrugging her shoulders, she wiped her eyes again. “I don't know,” she admitted softly. Looking back at the well, she added, “I can't go home. That door is closed to me, but ….I don't know if I want to stay in the village either.”
“That is understandable,” Kaede replied. “Ye are welcome to stay, however. I am sure we'd be able to find a farmer or someone else if ye wish to marry.”
Frowning, Kagome shook her head. “No, I don't think I will. I'm sure word will spread about what happened, and I don't know who would want to marry me after such a dishonor.”
“Lady Kagome is right,” Miroku said, stepping into the clearing. “The men here who would be willing to wed her after this are not the type I would see her married to.”
Sighing, Kaede rubbed the bridge of her nose. Such a happy day had surely turned into a grand mess. “If ye insist on leaving, then I will pack a bag for ye with everything ye will need.”
“The miko shall come with this one,” a new voice stated, piercing the clearing.
Frowning, Kagome replied, “That's not necessary, Sesshomaru. I'm sure you have better things to do than look after a worthless human.”
Amber eyes narrowed, and frowning, he said, “Old woman, fetch the miko's belongings. This one shall wait here for your return.”
Bowing, Miroku said, “I shall accompany you, Lady Kaede and bring the supplies.” Nodding her thanks, Kaede turned and headed back towards the village. It would take her time to get there and she didn't want to keep the demon lord waiting more than was necessary. At least she wouldn't have to make the return trip. He old knees would not have appreciated it.
Once they were alone, Kagome looked back at the well, and said, “You really don't have to do this, Sesshomaru.”
“What the hanyou did was dishonorable to you, to the Lady Sayuri, to this one, and to the house of Taisho. I will not have a stain as such remain on my house, miko,” Sesshomaru replied coolly.
Frowning, Kagome resisted the urge to huff. She should have known he wasn't offering because he was worried about her. It was always about honor with this demon. Although, it was an out. She wouldn't have to stay in the village and be forced to marry a farmer who wouldn't respect her. Then there was an added bonus of never having to see Inuyasha again. Surely the boy wouldn't seek out his brother, even if she was with him.
“Fine,” Kagome replied after a few minutes. “I'll go with you.”
Staring at the sky, Sesshomaru gave no indication that he heard her. Thankfully, Miroku returned shortly after with two bags. Placing them on the ground near her, he explained, “This one is clothing, blankets and furs. I had tried to pack your futon, but it wouldn't fit. This one has your personal affects as well as several containers of herbs and other medicinal items you might need. There is also a water skin in there and some dried meet.”
“Thank you, Miroku,” Kagome replied softly.
Nodding, he jumped when Sesshomaru appeared next to him and took the bags. Smiling sheepishly, he pressed his palms together, and said, “Safe travels, Lady Kagome. I wish you well and hope that you will see fit to visit us on occasion.”
Wiping her eyes, Kagome nodded, and replied, “I will. And thank you, Miroku, for everything. Tell Kaede thank you for me as well, and apologize to Sango.”
“I am sure she will understand,” Miroku assuaged. Bowing to the pair, he quickly turned and headed for the village. The gossip and rumors were already running rampant and it was time someone put the record straight before it got too out of control.
Shifting on her feet, Kagome jumped when Sesshomaru said, “Come.”
Looking up, she saw his hand stretched out and a cloud of energy at his feet. Swallowing thickly, she took a few hesitant steps forward and slowly put her hand in his. Pulling her towards him, Kagome squeaked and latched onto the first thing she found. The softest fur she had ever felt threaded through her fingers, almost making her gasp again. Feeling the wind brush across her face, she glanced down for only a moment, and instantly regretted it. Burying her face in the soft fluff, she was shocked by the speed they were traveling. While she trusted Sesshomaru not to let her fall, she didn't trust herself to not somehow trip or slip out of his grip and plummet to the landscape speeding by below.
She was thankful for the fluff or pelt or whatever it was on Sesshomaru's shoulder. The wind was cold against her skin and even with all her layers on, she was sure without the fur surrounding her, this mode of travel would have made for a very uncomfortable ride. Gripping the fur tighter, she rubbed her face into it, not even thinking if he cared or not. Although, since he allowed her to ride with him and the length of pelt wrapped down her form, part of her figured it wouldn't be that big of a deal. It was going to smell like her anyway.
After what felt like hours, Kagome was growing bored and finally asked, “Where are we going?”
“Home,” Sesshomaru replied flatly.
“So to the west?” Kagome asked, shifting slightly.
Brows furrowing, Sesshomaru replied, “Yes, miko. My family home is in the west.”
Frowning, Kagome thought about what he said. Family home. So he had a physical home. She didn't realize that he had a home, but then again she never really gave much thought to it either. He always seemed to be wandering around the land, so she never thought of him having a place to go at night, or whenever he wanted. Inuyasha just lived in the woods until their little group had formed. He was reluctant to remain in the huts at first but slowly warmed up to it, especially in inclement weather. She had just assumed that Sesshomaru would have been the same. Living in the woods or caves or whatever.
Feeling the wind shift from hitting her back to pressing down on top of her, Kagome's grip tightened on his pelt. The air grew colder and she felt herself shiver involuntarily. Then suddenly, the wind stopped and she felt her feet touch solid ground. Peeking out from the white fluff, she took a cautious step away from the demon lord and looked around with wide eyes.
Clouds surrounded the platform they stood on. On one side was a long flight of stairs lined with armed men, and the other side was nothing. Taking a step closer, she tried to peer over the side. She could see the land far below and felt her lungs freeze in her chest. They were floating.
“Miko,” a voice purred behind her. “This one would be put out if he had to catch you.”
Smiling sheepishly, Kagome slowly backed away from the edge and turning, followed Sesshomaru up the long flight of stairs. The long steps had armed guards posted every so often and Kagome could feel her stomach tighten with every eye that would shift her way. At the top of the steps was a large dais with a throne that appeared similar to a chaise lounge positioned in the center. Standing in front of the dais was a beautiful woman. Her silver hair was pulled into twin tails and a silk kimono draped elegantly over her form. A plush pelt wrapped around her shoulders and trailed down to the ground. A familiar crescent moon graced her forehead and delicate magenta strips lined the bottom of each eye.
“Sesshomaru,” she purred.
“Mother,” Sesshomaru replied with a slight incline of his head. “This is the Shikon Miko, Higurashi Kagome,” he added without diverting his eyes.
An elegant eyebrow raised, and amber eyes scanned the human woman standing next to her son. The white kimono she wore was disheveled and her hair was in disarray. Tutting, she strode towards the pair, and said, “I thought I raised you better, Sesshomaru.” Grabbing Kagome's arm, she locked it in her own, and pulling the human away, continued, “Allowing the poor girl to end up in such a state on her wedding day. Shameful. Come, we will have you cleaned up and presentable.” Humming thoughtfully, she added, “The house colors should look lovely on you.”
Kagome glanced back at Sesshomaru, but he remained still, not making an attempt to rescue her. Swallowing thickly, she glanced at his mother as she was pulled further into the complex. A maze of pristine hallways wound through the shiro eventually leading to a large bathing area. A heated pool of water was surrounded by polished stone and framed with a raised wooden platform.
An army of maids waited for them and Kagome was stripped the instant the door slid closed. Scrubbed and primped, she was overwhelmed by the flurry of activity around her, but found solace in the heated water once she was allowed to soak in the pool. Sitting on an overstuffed pillow, Sesshomaru's mother watched the human silently for a moment. She was not what she had pictured her son choosing, but the boy was eccentric.
“You may call me Inukimi, or mother, if you would prefer,” she said.
Brown eyes shifted and took in the demoness sitting near her. Kagome wasn't sure what to do. Inclining her head, she replied, “Thank you for your hospitality.”
Waving her off, Inukimi replied, “It is only right. Now, lets get out, dried and dressed before you prune. Wrinkles are never a good look on a human after all.”
The army of maids returned as if summoned by magic. Kagome was dried quickly and her hair was pulled into a taka shimada style normally worn by women recently wed. A white and red kimono was wrapped around her and finished off by a yellow and Prussian blue obi. Inukimi smiled when the maids finished and stepped away from the girl. She was lovely, for a human.
Waving the maids off, Inukimi grasped Kagome's arm and led her to another part of the shiro. A screen was slid open as the two women approached, revealing a large room on the other side. A single table was set in the middle and was framed by two floor pillows. Set neatly on the table was soup, sea bream, shrimp and red rice. Kagome's heart plummeted into her feet, but was given little time to contemplate what was happening. Sesshomaru arrived only a moment later and when the two were seated at the table, tea was served and the meal commenced.
Kagome stared at the traditional wedding meal sat before them. Apparently Inukimi had misunderstood what was taking place when Sesshomaru had brought her there. Yes, she was in her wedding garb, but she wasn't married, especially not to Sesshomaru. Poking at the food with her chopsticks, it felt wrong to eat it, but seemed even worse not to. Taking small bites, the food was delicious, but tasted strangely bland on her tongue. It was a similar meal to what the village had prepared for her and Inuyasha. Maybe that was where she was having the most issues.
If Sesshomaru noticed her lack of appetite, he didn't comment on it. In fact, he didn't say a word the entire time they ate. The only sound was from their chopsticks touching the plates and the soft clatter of the tea cups being placed back on the table. Unable to eat anymore, Kagome placed her hands in her lap and waited for Sesshomaru to finish.
Without a word, Sesshomaru stood, and holding a hand out, helped Kagome to her feet. Walking slowly, he led her to her room. It was lovely and bigger than she had expected. Turning to thank him, Sesshomaru was already gone. Sighing, Kagome closed the door behind her and walking to a low vanity, sat and began to pull the pins and combs from her hair. Allowing the long locks to fall down her back, she played with a strand absently.
She wasn't tired but there was no reason for her to stay up either. There was nothing for her to do after all. Sighing again, she stood and stripped from the silk kimono she had been shoved into earlier. It was lovely, but Kagome couldn't see the beauty in anything at the moment. She was sure the feeling would pass at some point, but it would take time. Wearing nothing but a thin yukata, she laid down on the futon in the middle of the room and forced herself to sleep.
~ ~ ~ ~
Morning came too soon. Kagome was exhausted. She barely slept and ended up crying for half of the night. Inukimi didn't seem to notice or care about the dark bags under her eyes though. Another army of maids invaded her room and quickly dressed Kagome for the day. Sitting at a small table across from Inukimi, servants served the two women then disappeared.
Sipping her tea, Inukimi eyed the woman across from her. Tired or not, they had things to do. Placing her cup down, she said, “We will begin your training today.”
“Training?” Kagome asked.
“Of course,” Inukimi hummed. “You must be well versed in etiquette, the tea ceremony and politics. We can not have you making a slip on accident after all.”
It was official. She was in hell. Inukimi was a slave driver and demanded nothing but perfection. On a normal day it would have been rough, but with how tired Kagome was from a lack of sleep, it was plain torture. Thankfully, Inukimi had been called away by a servant and Kagome saw her chance to bolt. She needed to find Sesshomaru and now. She couldn't take anymore of this. She had no reason to know how to glide across the floor like a hime, much less which demon lord was married to who and what alliances it formed. While interesting, she supposed, it had no bearing in her life. At least she was able to preform a passable tea ceremony according to the demoness. That was something she could thank her grandfather for she guessed.
Racing through the halls, Kagome was at a loss. Sesshomaru wasn't anywhere she looked. Finally cornering a maid, Kagome learned that her savior had abandoned her. He had left that morning without a word much less an estimate on when he'd return. She had no choice but to indulge Inukimi and her training. It's not like she could leave either so with any luck, Inukimi would lose interest and cease her training after a week or two.
~ ~ ~ ~
Time passed slowly. Inukimi was a slave driver, but gave praise when it was due. Kagome had learned all of the political workings and intrigue of the demon world and even improved on the tea ceremony. Etiquette was where she struggled and while Inukimi still corrected her harshly when she'd slack off or screw up, the demoness understood that there were just some things that a human wouldn't be able to do as well as a demon.
Sitting in the garden, Kagome stared at the koi swimming in the pond. This place had become a bit of a refuge for her. Inukimi didn't care for the gardens and rarely traversed the deserted paths. It was quiet, and gave Kagome time to reflect on everything that had happened to her in the last six months. Hearing the shuffling of feet, Kagome internally groaned.
A maid appeared a moment later, and bowing said, “My lady, the lady mother is asking for you. A guest has arrived.”
Nodding, Kagome stood and turned back towards the shiro. She wondered who was there. They rarely had guests. Hell, Sesshomaru hadn't even returned yet. She was more than ready to give him a piece of her mind.
Following the maid to the receiving room, Kagome's heart dropped into her feet. Standing next to Inukimi was a woman she never thought she'd have to see again. Lady Sayuri looked just as lovely as she remembered. Keeping her face placid, Kagome approached the women and inclining her head, greeted their guest.
Tea was promptly served and Inukimi transformed into the perfect hostess. Kagome chanted her lessons in her head, not wanting to disappoint the demoness. It wouldn't be good to take her anger out on this woman. She wasn't responsible for Inuyasha's decisions after all.
The conversation was kept light. Inukimi discussed the land and business with Lady Sayuri as well as fashion and other trends and what that was doing to trade. Kagome listened quietly, not trusting herself to say anything lest she speak out in anger. Unfortunately, the conversation turned towards a topic Kagome prayed it would stay away from.
“How is married life,” Inukimi finally asked.
“Well,” Lady Sayuri replied. “I was admittedly worried at first, but my lord husband has a caring heart.”
Humming thoughtfully, Inukimi asked, “Is he away often?”
“No, my lady,” Lady Sayuri replied. “Lord Sesshomaru has come to retrieve him a few times for various tasks, but he is never gone for long.” Smiling brightly, a hand was placed lightly on her abdomen, and she continued, “In fact, we are expecting our first.”
Amber eyes lit up, and Inukimi replied, “How wonderful!” Pouting, she added flippantly, “Unfortunately, my lord son is never here. I fear I may never get to meet his heir.”
Laughing lightly, Lady Sayuri replied, “I am sure that will not be the case, my lady.”
Kagome's hands were clinched tightly into fists. Her knuckles were white and her nails dug painfully into her palms. Rising slowly she bowed low, and said, “Excuse, my lady. I am not feeling well.”
Cocking her head, Inukimi said, “You do seem rather pale.” Waving Kagome off, she continued speaking with Sayuri about children and what to expect.
Walking down the hallway quickly, Kagome headed straight for her room. Leaning against a byobu, her head hit the screen hard as she slid to the floor slowly. Pregnant. The word echoed in her head. Inuyasha was going to be a father. He sounded happy. Tears welled in her eyes and slid down her cheeks unbidden.
~ ~ ~ ~
Inukimi watched the human closely. She was different. Something was wrong with her. Ever since Sayuri's visit, Kagome was not herself. She was melancholic and lifeless. No matter what she tried to cheer the woman up, nothing worked. Penning a neat letter, Inukimi was at a loss. Rolling the scroll, she handed it to a servant. Hopefully her son would come back quickly.
~ ~ ~ ~
Sitting in the garden, Kagome stared lifelessly at the koi. She was depressed. It took her a month to come to terms with it, but now another month had passed and she still was unable to get out of the trench she found herself in. Rising from her spot, she no longer wished to see the colorful fish darting about. Wandering the quiet halls, she paused when she heard Inukimi speaking softly to someone. She knew she shouldn't eavesdrop, but her curiosity was peaked. Moving slowly, she glanced into the room the demoness was in. Eyes widening, Kagome froze.
Glancing at the door, Inukimi smiled. Dismissing her son, she walked away, hoping that whatever was wrong would be resolved. Staring at Kagome, Sesshomaru could tell something was off with the woman. Walking towards her, he paused for a moment, and said, “Come.”
Continuing down the hall, he heard her soft footfalls follow only a moment later. Leading her to a small room, he allowed her to enter first before following and closing the door behind them. Taking a seat against the wall, he watched her sit gracefully on a pillow. She remained silent though, which in itself was strange for this woman. He was sure he would be bombarded with questions upon his return, but it seemed he would have to initiate their conversation.
“Mother said you have progressed well with your lessons,” Sesshomaru started, hoping to draw a reaction from her.
Her eyes flashed with a familiar spark for a second, but then was gone again. “I don't understand why she insists I learn those things,” Kagome finally admitted softly.
“Do you not?” Sesshomaru pressed.
Frowning, Kagome asked, “Where have you been?”
“Patrolling,” he replied easily.
“How long do I have to stay here?” she asked softly, raising her eyes to meet his.
Cocking his head, Sesshomaru asked, “Where else do you wish to be?”
Shrugging her shoulders, Kagome looked away. She really didn't have anywhere else to go in reality. But, she also didn't want to impose on Sesshomaru or his mother for much longer. She had been there for almost a year as it was. “Mother says you are not yourself,” he pried, trying to get a reaction out of her.
“She has me doing your finances,” Kagome shot back.
Blinking slowly, Sesshomaru asked, “Is all paid for?”
Kagome's mouth fell open. Closing it quickly, she thought for sure he'd be angered by that revelation and would agree it was time for her to leave. Stumbling, she searched her brain for an answer, and replied, “Yes. The guards are paid and the stores are full. There is a surplus of funds. I had thought about maybe replacing old weapons or armor with some of it.”
Humming thoughtfully, Sesshomaru replied, “A weapon is personal and must be chosen by the warrior unless gifted by a superior. Armor would welcome. I will also give you a list of men who may receive a salary increase and an increase of land. You may divide it how you see fit.”
“Me?!” Kagome stuttered.
Ignoring her outburst, Sesshomaru continued, “Mother says your state altered after Lady Sayuri visited. She believes that I have been remiss in leaving you for so long and that you desire children.”
Sucking in a deep breath, Kagome's lungs froze in her chest. Eyes wide, she didn't know what to say to that. Her mouth opened and closed like the koi she watched, unable to formulate a response. When her brain finally started functioning again, she scowled and snapped, “Your mother needs to mind her own business.” Smirking, Sesshomaru was glad that some of her old spark returned.
After eating dinner together, Sesshomaru took Kagome on a stroll through the garden. They walked comfortably in silence until they reached a bench surrounded by hydrangeas. Taking a seat, Kagome stared at her feet. She had thought about it a lot recently, and it was now or never. Looking at Sesshomaru, she was shocked to see that his eyes were already on her. She couldn't stall now. She wasn't sure when he would leave again or how long he would stay away, so she had to do it now.
“Lord Sesshomaru,” she started softly, “I ….thank you for allowing me to come here, but I think it is time for me to go.”
Straightening, Sesshomaru's muscles tightened all at once. “Go,” he rumbled.
Nodding, Kagome replied, “Yes. I don't know where I'll go but I refuse to be burden on you and your mother for any longer. I don't want to wear out your hospitality.”
Amber eyes narrowed. Frowning, he said, “Who do you take me for, Kagome?”
Eyes widening, Kagome wasn't sure what to say. “I, uh...”
“I am not without honor like the halfbreed,” Sesshomaru hissed. “Should you wish to leave I will not force you to stay, however know that when I invited you into my care, it was intended for the remainder of your days.”
Sucking in a deep breath, Kagome whispered, “You want me to stay forever?”
Nodding, Sesshomaru said, “You are no burden, Kagome. Never think otherwise.”
Frowning, Kagome's eyes fell to her feet once more. “But, what about when you want to start a family. I don't want any misunderstandings or to be in the way.”
Furrowing his brow, Sesshomaru asked, “What nonsense are you speaking of? Who has filled your head with lies? This one is not his father.”
Blinking, Kagome's mouth fell open. “No one said ...I just thought ….”
Grunting, Sesshomaru said, “Dismiss such foolish thoughts from your head. You will stay and should you wish for children or something more you need only ask. This one will see that it is done.”
About to protest again, Kagome could see the determination in his eyes. Smiling weakly, she nodded, unable to do anything else but agree.

Sesshomaru stayed at the shiro for two weeks before leaving again. It was strange having him there but also pleasant. Surprising too was that he returned only a month later and showed no signs of leaving again. Not that Kagome minded. It was his home after all, but he constantly sought out her company which was strange to her as well. Not only that, but he continued to have her handle his finances even though he was present. It gave her something to do, but it was still strange to her.
Soaking in the bathhouse, Kagome stared at the steam gathering at the ceiling. Hearing the screen slide open, she glanced over her shoulder curiously. Inukimi strode in and casually undressed. Not a maid was in sight which was strange, but the demoness didn't seem to notice and quickly washed off before sinking into the heated pool across from Kagome.
Sighing pleasantly, amber eyes closed. “I don't know what you told Sesshomaru, but it is nice having him home more often. He was always so quick to leave in the past then stay away for years sometimes.”
“I didn't say anything to him,” Kagome admitted softly.
Ignoring her comment, Inukimi continued, “When can I expect grandchildren?”
“Um...” Kagome said, her cheeks flushing. Why was the woman asking her? Surely that was a question for her son.
Scoffing, amber eyes opened lazily and stared at Kagome. “Now that Sesshomaru is spending more time here, surely you two could find the time to gift me with at least one grandchild.”
“Me?!” Kagome squeaked.
“Who else,” Inukimi huffed.
“Why me?!” Kagome screeched.
Frowning, Inukimi rubbed her ears. “Who else would he have children from but his wife?”
Face paling, Kagome's heart froze. Wife. Surely she didn't think. Oh no. Memories of her showing up in a wedding kimono flashed in her head. A traditional wedding feast was held after as well. Groaning, Kagome's eyes closed. “We're not married,” she grumbled, wondering why Sesshomaru had never corrected her assumptions.
A thin eyebrow rose, and a sharp laugh escaped painted lips. “Such an odd sense of humor you have. Are all humans so funny?”
Rolling her eyes, Kagome sat up and climbed out of the pool. Drying off, she wrapped a clean yukata around her body. “I'm not joking,” Kagome grumbled. “I'm not married to your son.”
“Oh,” Inukimi purred, rising from the water as well. “I could have sworn you arrived in a shiromuku, but then again, I am rather old, so maybe my memory is faulty.”
Rubbing the bridge of her nose, Kagome said, “I did. I was supposed to marry Inuyasha that day.”
“But you did not,” Inukimi stated.
“No,” Kagome huffed. “I didn't.”
“And why is that,” Inukimi pried, drying off.
“Because he had already promised to marry Lady Sayuri,” Kagome hissed.
Nodding, Inukimi replied, “So then my son offered to take you into his home, did he not.”
“Yes,” Kagome replied.
“And you agreed,” Inukimi pushed.
“Yes,” Kagome said, “I agreed.”
Smiling, Inukimi finished tying her yukata closed, and said, “Well then, it seems you are indeed married to my son, Kagome.”
“What,” Kagome gasped. But Inukimi didn't respond and instead left the bathhouse.
Furrowing her brow, Kagome left the bathhouse in a furry. Storming down the halls, she sensed Sesshomaru in a room near her own. Without stopping to think or knock, she slid the door open harshly and marched into the room.
Standing before her was a half dressed demon lord. Staring at her blankly, Kagome quickly turned around, her face burning. “Is there something you need,” Sesshomaru asked, closing his yukata and tying the sash around his waist.
Kagome's brain felt completely fried. Need? Something she needed? Swallowing thickly, an image of pale skin and tone muscles flashed through her head, making her face flush a deeper red.
“Kagome,” he rumbled next to her ear.
Squeaking, Kagome whipped around and took a step back, trying to put space between them. Her tongue felt dry and stiff like cotton, but she managed to say, “Your mother thinks we're married.”
A dark eyebrow rose beneath trim bangs. Flushing red again, Kagome pursed her lips and crossing her arms over her chest, snapped, “Well, say something.”
“We are wed,” Sesshomaru stated calmly. “For a year now, in fact.”
“What?!” Kagome squeaked. “But there was no ceremony! And why wasn't I told anything about this?!”
Furrowing his brow, Sesshomaru replied, “You agreed to the arrangement.”
“I what?” Kagome asked confused.
“Inuyasha dishonored you. To remove the dishonor done to you and our house, I, as his brother and next of kin, took you as my own and into my home,” Sesshomaru stated simply.
“I thought ….” Kagome started. “But we ….you never ….we haven't even kissed.”
Cocking his head, Sesshomaru asked, “Would you like this one to kiss you?”
Flushing red, Kagome shook her head, and said, “I mean, that's what married people do!”
Frowning, Sesshomaru said, “If that was what you desired, you needed only ask. This one assumed you would have wanted a marriage in name only and was willing to give you a comfortable life. However if you desire more, this one is willing.”
“You,” pausing, Kagome licked her dry lips, “you were willing to have a loveless marriage with someone …. with me? Why?”
“Does this one need a reason,” Sesshomaru replied.
“Yes!” Kagome insisted.
“Perhaps,” Sesshomaru replied, leaning closer to her, “seeing you happy pleases me and that is enough.”
Shaking her head, Kagome wiped the tears forming in her eyes. “What about love?” she asked.
Scoffing, Sesshomaru purred, “Foolish woman.” Closing the space between them, he didn't allow her time to back away. Pulling her into him, he captured her lips with his own. Pouring all he could into it, he hoped that she would feel the emotions that he was unable to vocalize.
Pulling away slowly, he heard her whisper, “I don't understand. When?”
“Does it matter?” he asked.
“You never said anything,” she contested.
“You belonged to another,” he countered.
“Lady Sayuri,” she said when he leaned in to kiss her again.
Pausing just above her lips, he said, “You disappeared. There are few inuyokai left and Inuyasha was of age to find a mate. There was no ulterior motives when this one set up the match. However, this one is pleased he had agreed to it, and even more so that he acted dishonorably towards you. While this one did not like to see you hurt, it brought you to me.”
He pressed his lips to hers again, but allowed her to pull away a minute later. “You left the next day,” she pointed out.
“I am a lord,” he replied. “There will always be duties that pull me away. However, mother reminded me that I was being remiss in my new duties so I have allocated some of my responsibilities to others.” Running a hand through her unbound hair, he added, “If it can be helped, I will not leave for such an extended time again.”
When he leaned in to kiss her again, she asked against his lips, “You really want this? You want me?”
“I would not have brought you here otherwise,” he rumbled.

Sitting in the garden, Kagome watched the koi fish swimming by. Hearing a growl behind her, she glanced over her shoulder sheepishly. A pair of arms wrapped around her waist, rubbing soothing circles over her stomach. Burying his nose in her hair, he rumbled, “You are supposed to be in bed, woman.”
“I was going stir crazy,” Kagome admitted. “I'm only sitting, Sesshomaru. What's the difference if I sit here or in there?”
“In there,” he rumbled, placing a kiss on top of her head, “should something happen, there are people around to assist you.”
“Well,” she said with a grin, “it's a good thing my husband showed up because now I can stay out here.”
Huffing, a small smile tugged at his lips. Rubbing her stomach again, he was amazed it could extend so far. “Inuyasha has a daughter.”
“Oh,” Kagome said with a smile. “I'll have to send a gift to Lady Sayuri.”
Grunting, Sesshomaru kissed her cheek. Rubbing her stomach again, he stared at her large stomach. While he wouldn't be opposed to a daughter, he prayed for sons. Although, if they would have a daughter, he would just have to keep trying until a son was born. Smirking, he kissed her again, not opposed to the idea.
