There is so much to love in this vignette! Let me count the ways.
(1) The way Jaken respects and obeys Kagome. He was pretty much insufferable in the original series and an obsequious little turd when it came to Sesshomaru. That he doesn't mouth off to Kagome here and addresses her by her title is good enough for me (yes, I'm certain his respect for her came largely through association with Sesshomaru).
(2) I definitely chuckled at Kagome grumbling about "I'm no good at this stone cold killer stuff" and griping for Sesshomaru to just get up and take things into his own hands. It captures her reluctance to kill, but there's also a sort of affection in that exasperated statement. Sesshomaru is the aristocratic assassin who would kill without hesitation, and that's his thing, not Kagome's—this is something they both know and the shared knowledge is what I see Kagome referencing here. It's a subtle reminder of their familiarity and how well they understand each other. Also, it's kind of a sassy thing to say and I love it.
(3) Knowing that Sesshomaru has come to see his affection for and attachment to humans as strength rather than weakness. That to me speaks of maturity and character development off the page. No more fear of emotions and distaste of other species; he's grown enough to realise that it's our relationships with others (whether our equals or not) that give life flavour and meaning—and for him, even greater strength. PLUS, he recognises and respects Kagome as an equal, and that is most definitely swoon-worthy in my book.
(4) Kagome being the badass that she is and willing to put herself in harm's way to protect those she loves. It's very in character for her and one of the things that make her so appealing. I see this as something that she and Sesshomaru have in common, though the latter will probably be loath too admit it: they would put everything on the line to make sure that their loved ones stay safe. They just approach this in different ways.
Awesome work Gos, love to see it.
Oh, this was so sad, but so good. I always did wonder about how Kagome might be treated by the village if she stayed behind. I think you captured it very well.
I'm glad they can eventually return one day. Thank you for sharing this with us.
this was so beautiful!!! I love fluff!! And this was so perfect! I loved how Sesshomaru was so protective of both her and the newborn! Thanks for sharing! Also looks like yours is the last fic I can get to today, I'll have to catch up.on everyone else's tomorrow.
These have been so lovely to read! Your first one just gave me all of the happy feels, and your second was lovely especially in the way you described Kagome's thoughts as she battled! Thank you for sharing!
