Prologue: The Calm before the Storm

Sweat slowly dripped from the water bottle resting gently against Kagome's thigh.

"Argh.! It's so hot!" she mumbled as she half heartedly swiped a cool clothe across her forehead.

"Quit your whining wench." Inuyasha growled as he prowled closer to Kagome and the others.

Cracking an eye open to glare at him Kagome sighed.

"Quiet yourselves Kagome, Inuyasha it is far too hot for you two to be arguing." Miroku mumbled wisely as he sensed the storm of annoyance brewing between the two.

Sango sighed but nodded in agreement they had been sitting in the shade of this huge tree for over two hours now and still the over bearing sun had not lowered itself in the sky.

"We need to get going" Inuyasha persisted as he glanced at the brightly light sky, "Kaede's village shouldn't be to far."

The others sighed not wishing to brave the suns wraith but understanding the need to quickly continue on. Tonight would be the night of the new moon and without Inuyasha's demon powers if attacked they could be helpless.

Nodding Kagome stood dripping water bottle in hand, "Your right Inuyasha" she said happily as they all began to rise and continue their trek back to Lady Kaede's village.

Kagome frowned as she began walking. She had, had this weird ominous feeling all day and she wasn't exactly sure what the cause of it was. She had simply been chalking it up to the hopefully temporary loss of her miko powers, but that didn't really seem right to her, maybe it was the heat she thought. Still frowning she continued on watching the backs of the others yeah it just had to be the heat.

It took them, most of the day to reach Lady Kaede's village, by the time they arrived it was just starting to turn to dusk.

Inuyasha relaxed as he sensed the calming safety of the village the others would be all right he thought as he once again looked toward the sky, "Stupid new moon" he mumbled under his breathe as he turned and headed for the solitude of the Goshinboku.

No one questioned Inuyasha as he left all understood his need for privacy during the new moon. So Kagome and the others went on inside. Where Kagome was attacked by an energetic Shippo as he told he of all the things he had helped Kaede do while the group was away.

Listening politely Kagome quickly tried to calm the excited kit down.

After she had successfully distracted Shippo Kagome began looking through her pack taking a few things out that she wouldn't need while she was home, and making a mental list to pick up a few things. Nodding in satisfaction at her now much lighter pack Kagome sat it down next to the hut's door.

Sitting down next to Sango by the dying fire Kagome again frowned at the weird feeling she kept getting. It still hadn't gone away, actually it had gotten stronger she though in worry. What is going on? Looking at the others made Kagome's frown deepened no one except her seemed to be worried or weary of something. Maybe they don't sense it she thought. Shrugging it off, she joined their conversation with enthusiasm.

Much later as the village was enveloped in darkness Kagome began to feel uneasy, not sure yet what was causing this feeling she kept quiet.

"Kagome?" Miroku questioned as he noticed her distracted attitude "is there something wrong, perhaps you wish to inform us of?"

Not yet knowing just what was wrong Kagome merely shrugged his question off with a smile. "I'm fine Miroku, just tired I think I'll go ahead and head for home so I can be back early before Inuyasha gets upset."

"Would you like us to walk with you?" Sango said as she to began to notice Kagome's unusual weariness.

"No thanks Sango I think a little fresh air and some time to think might do me some good."

Nodding in understanding Sango smiled at her friend.

"Okay see you when you get back then." She replied.

Picking up her pack Kagome waved goodbye to her friends and began to head for the well. She frowned in uneasiness something was definitely wrong the weird sensation that she had all day was much stronger then it had been, almost like it was getting closer or something.

Stopping by the well Kagome listened closely to the sounds around her, she thought that she had heard something but wasn't sure. There it was again a rustle in the trees behind her looking to the Goshinboku Kagome frowned she could see Inuyasha sitting high upon its branches.

Turning back to the rustling Kagome grabbed for her pack incase she had to make a jump for the well. What was in the trees? She asked herself as she got closer to the well.

Out of no where there was a roar of triumph and a silver blur raced towards her screaming Kagome ducked out of the way just in time. Rolling to her knees she glanced up at the thing that had just charged her.

She gasped in utter horror as she realized what or rather who had just tried to attack her.

Sesshomaru stood in front of her his clothing torn and his skin slightly scratched from what looked like tree branches. His appearance wasn't what had scared her though it was his eyes they were completely blood red, there was no trace of the intelligent being that Sesshomaru usually presented himself as. All control had been stripped from him the beast in his blood was free to roam.

"SESSHOMARU leave her along!" Inuyasha yelled in human form from across the clearing.

There was a snarl from the beast in front of her. Then Sesshomaru was simply gone from her sight.

Then the next thing she new there was a loud yell then silence.

Looking around for Sesshomaru Kagome gasped at the sight of Inuyasha's crumpled form. She began running towards him but within a few steps Sesshomaru was before her again snarling viciously.

"What should I do?"

Slowly she began backing away from him as he moved toward her.

"Sesshomaru wha...what are you doing...what's wrong?" she asked in an attempt to engage the intelligent side of his being. A crazed snarl was her only answer as he rapidly began advancing on her.

A shine of panic glimmered in her eyes as she stumbled over something at her feet.

Looking down she saw the well. But it was already too late Sesshomaru was upon her. Her senses went wild as his body hit hers, she could instantly feel the release of her miko powers as they surged around her in protection. But again it was too late. The force of the impact sent her flailing and she fell backwards holding onto Sesshomaru for balance as they both toppled into the well.

Briefly a bright yellow green light lit up the clearing, and then there was nothing but the cover of darkness.
