Chapter One: A Pleasant Flight
Kagome was tired, exhausted really with the goings on of the Sengoku Jidai. She was stuck of course, had been since the completion of the jewel which had as with everything of meaning in her life disappeared as abruptly as it had become whole. She was so ridiculously tired of the seemingly endless array of misfortune that seemed to befall her that she had decided giving up was the best solution. And so she did exactly that.
"Oi, dinner is ready." Disinterested brown eyes turned to the hanyou on the edge of the clearing. She hated him. Her gaze fell over his silver hair, messy but beautiful, and his rough features and she felt a pang of desire rush through her being. She pushed it away as quickly as it came, her hatred burning once more within her eyes. Stupid bastard. His golden eyes seemed confused by her sudden intense stare and he turned away. Coward. He motioned with his hand before disappearing back towards Edo. She made no move to follow nor did she intend to for a very long time. Dinner would be cold but she no longer cared. She was perfectly comfortable out here on the edge of the wilderness.
She knew this hatred of him would pass with just the slightest show of kindness from his part. She cursed whoever it was that decided love could be so wicked. In the distance, she could hear the villagers yelling to their children to come inside. She didn't want to listen anymore. She was no longer a child herself and she knew she would never belong here in Edo. As much as she called it home, she was just lying to herself. She was completely and utterly lost forever.
"Fuck." As quickly as the word left her lips, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment at the outburst. Was she really this pathetic that she would curse everything and do nothing for the rest of her life? Maybe she could just go give up somewhere else, somewhere that didn't involve ruggedly handsome hanyous. Yes, that was exactly it. She would just leave. She could go find some village in need of a priestess and simply resign herself to her pathetic fate there. Perfect. It was absolutely perfect.
Looking back towards the direction Inuyasha had left; she felt a tinge of sadness for a moment but quickly pushed it aside. Kagome was going to find herself something better. She would see them again. Someday. Standing up quickly, she clutched her bow tightly in her hand. She couldn't afford to go back because she'd never be able to tell them to their faces that she was leaving. She would leave now while she still had the courage. And so Kagome set off into the wilderness.
"Three months and I'm already running away." She muttered to herself almost angrily as she forced her way through the dense trees. Clad in a simple black kimono and her old loafers, she was a complete mess. Only a few hours away from Edo and she already looked like she'd been traveling for days. Years spent traveling on the road had done nothing to change her rather horrible sense of balance. She had fallen more times than she could count in the first hour of her escape and now leaves and other debris clung to her hair. She didn't care because she was escaping the life that she didn't want to live. She didn't want to live in Kikyo's shadow, she didn't want to look at Inuyasha and love him no matter how horrible he treated her, and she didn't want to have to be anyone's burden. A sudden queasiness in the pit of her belly alerted her to the exact presence she was escaping from.
"But I got so far..." And then she was falling. She didn't plan it. She didn't even see what she'd tripped on. But she found herself rolling rather roughly down a steep slope. This absolutely sucks. She allowed her body to be tossed violently down the rough terrain, grunting with each small bush she came into contact with. With a loud groan, she found herself in a heap at the bottom of a rather large ravine. The nausea she had felt moments before was faint meaning that her little trip had saved her from being dragged back home.
"Victory is mine."
"Lady Kagome!"
"Oh fuck." She didn't even allow herself to feel bad for that comment. It was completely justified as the small form of a girl wrapped tightly around her. Raising her guilty eyes upwards, she met the golden eyes she preferred never to see. She didn't get it. Other youkai, including Inuyasha, always caused a slight ache in her stomach which was never present with the bastard's brother. The ice princess before her probably made sure his aura didn't get detected by anyone. Stupid perfect Lord of the West.
Allowing herself to crouch and hug the child, she figured it would be the easiest way to avoid being chopped into little bits. Wrapping yourself around a demon lord's ward has to provide you a little protection, right? The girl's bright brown eyes seemed glassy as she pulled away. Her bottom lip was jut out in a small pout. What is going on?
"Lady Kagome, Lord Sesshoumaru won't bathe with me anymore!!!!!!" If her cheeks could get redder, she swore she would've become a tomato. Her eyes met the taiyoukai's hesitantly. She gulped when she saw the absolute loathing in their golden depths. Rin tugged on her sleeve, pulling her towards the other side of the clearing.
"Will you bathe with me, Lady Kagome?" She gulped again as she looked back. He was still watching her with that stare. A sudden yell from above announced Inuyasha's arrival. Kagome couldn't escape fast enough.
"Sure, Rin. Whatever you want!" She practically dragged the poor girl out of the clearing. The sound of clashing swords behind her only spurred Kagome to run faster but Rin stopped to look back.
"Is the filthy hanyou fighting Lord Sesshoumaru?" The blur of white and red a few yards away made Kagome cringe. She nodded dumbly. Rin's hand clutched Kagome's tightly as she watched the fight for a few moments before a devilish grin spread across her face.
"I hope the filthy hanyou wins." Kagome's eyes widened as the girl turned briskly on her heel and headed towards the spring. She laughed nervously, hoping the 'filthy hanyou' ended up unconscious instead of victorious.
Rin's anger at Sesshoumaru was more surprising than her actually running away in the middle of the night. For the past couple years, it had always appeared as if the girl had adored everything about the taiyoukai. But now, here she was complaining about how the man had become a completely worthless demon. Kagome watched the young girl, now about fourteen, sink into the hot spring and realized that it was probably the influx of hormones that was making her act this way. Yes, we all have to grow up sometime. Kagome shook her head and stripped quickly.
"Is this yours, miko?" Kagome froze. A soft breeze blew over her naked skin as she turned hesitantly around. Sesshoumaru stood silently behind her, holding an unconscious Inuyasha by his collar. His gaze dropped suddenly and she felt her entire body burn red.
"PERVERT!" Her powers exploded in embarrassment, filling the small clearing with a sudden pink glow s Kagome practically launched herself into the hotspring. Sinking to the tip of her nose, she turned away from the surprised taiyoukai and huffed.
"Lord Sesshoumaru, Lady Kagome and Rin do not wish to suffer your presence. Please leave." Kagome peeked over her shoulder to see the demon's eyes widen in fury as he watched his ward turn away from him as well. With a growl, he disappeared into the forest dragging his unconscious brother with him. Turning slowly, she was met with the devious grin of the little girl.
"So, if I wash your back, will you wash mine?"
