Laughter

The insanity of losing.

Word Count: 436

Her life is anything but peaceful, he knows, and as she hums and chatters and cries to herself, he finds himself thinking, not for the first time, how great it will be if he can give her that peace he has always thought she wishes for. What better way to achieve this than to end her life?

As days came and gone, weeks begin to fly past his eyes. He finds himself stop counting the days of her following him, and instead chooses to count for the day when she will finally decide to leave him to his normal life.

I'll give her five-hundred days, he thinks aggravated to himself one sunny, warm day, if she doesn't leave in that time, I shall relieve her of her useless existence.

Deeper inside, he berates himself for being so lenient towards the girl. Five-hundred days of tolerating her presence will certainly not be enjoyable, and he knows he can kill her any time he wants.

And yet, as even more time left him, he finds that five-hundred days simply would not do.

Three-hundred. I'll give her three-hundred days, he growls in his mind, eyes narrowing to tiny slits as she begins to sob for the sixth time that afternoon.

"Inuyasha!" He managed to make out in the midst of her incoherent cries, annoyance growing as the heavy scent of her tears attacked his nostrils. "Shippou..."

In between cracking the knuckles of his one hand and trying to reign his anger, He counts numbers in his head.

"Leave, girl," he says for the last time, he is sure.

"But don't you remember? You promised," she dares to say, her gray eyes swimming with a fake innocence that disappeared long ago, "you promised him. Don't you remember? Don't you remember?"

He splays his fingers and grinds his teeth as the girl becomes hysterical, laughing and sobbing at the same time. She is completely mad, he thinks, not for the first time.

"I remember," he says to her, but inside, he wants to tell her more. To let her know his anger, his annoyance, the patience that has snapped with her unwelcome company. I want to forget, and you are the one that is keeping me from it.

"Leave," he repeats, "or I shall end your pathetic existence."

As the girl continues to laugh and cry, he knows what he needs to do.

Today is the last day.

As he walks through the thick woods, he thought he hears the wind speaking to him, whining in its raspy voice.

It reminded him of a child's song that Rin used to sing. So many, so many years ago.

Kagome, Kagome... Kagome...

He is gently, softly, reminded why he hates laughter.
