Snow by Raeanna Red Roses
Snow
I needed a break for "Beauty in the Breakdown," plus I needed something to do before work, so I decided to write this. It's not really anything significant, just a little one-shot to pass the time. Even though I wrote it in about thirty or so minutes and I don't expect it to be that good, I hope you enjoy it.
Disclaimer: Not mine. Don't sue.
Snow
Kagome was at home. Since the completion of the jewel nearly three months ago, the well had stopped working, and she had been returned to her own time.
It was freezing outside, yet she was sitting in front of the Goshinbuko, looking small and frail in her oversized coat.
The tree stretched towards the sky, looking as though she could reach heaven if she climbed it. But heaven, for Kagome, was left 500 years in the past.
:::flashback:::
The night was cold, and even though it didn't really bother her, Kagome couldn't sleep. She glanced at Shippou, who was dead asleep and tucked inside her sleeping bag. She was careful not to disturb him as she maneuvered her way out of the blankets and grabbed her coat from where it was lying next to her yellow backpack.
When she entered the clearing, unaware that she was not alone, she looked up at the sky. The moon was a silver sliver. Its light was occasionally blocked out by the clouds that drifted across the night sky. Kagome stuffed her hands in her pockets and sighed. She was quite warm in the jeans and sweater she brought with her, and was even more comfortable in the coat she wrapped herself in. It was too big for her, but the patchwork covering kept the chill out. When the moon came out again, it brought with it a visitor.
"Sesshoumaru..." she whispered, feeling a stab of terror run through her. The taiyoukai walked silently towards her, and it was then that Kagome truly noticed the cold. Her breath came out in puffs, and she noticed her nose was almost numb with the cold.
He didn't say anything, or make a move for his weapons, just walked until he was not even three feet from her. He was staring at the sky with her, watching the Lady Moon as she stared down at the earth. Kagome looked over at her companion, and thought that he was a strange kind of beauty she had never seen before. With his silver hair and pale skin, he looked as if he embodied the winter that surrounded them.
A light breeze made its way through the night, and without realizing it, Kagome shivered. Then, as if he had been watching, Sesshoumaru made his way over to her, and embraced her. Kagome froze, unsure of what to do.
Sesshoumaru was not a very affectionate person, but he had been watching this strange girl for quite sometime. She seemed to have a never-ending supply of care and love for those closest to her. She did not judge anyone for what they were or for what they were not. She had become a mother to the fox child, a sister and friend to both the monk and the demon slayer, and both a friend and a source of comfort to his brother. A warmer person he had never known. And even as he embraced her now, he realized she had become something more that a curiosity to him.
He felt her relax against him, letting her guard down, and held her tighter.
:::end flashback:::
Kagome shifted in the large coat, remembering when she had huddled in it against him. Even when he looked to be made of ice, she had never been warmer then when he had held her.
:::flashback:::
Kagome slipped from her sleeping bag, as she had been doing for nearly a year now. Tomorrow the jewel would be completed and she would see what happened. She was afraid of being sealed in her own time, away from the people she cared most about, and the love she never expected.
As she reached the clearing, she felt arms wrap around her from behind, warming her chilled form almost instantly.
"You are late; I was starting to wonder what happened to you," the familiar voice said from behind her. She had learned to figure out what it was that he meant when he said things like that. She knew what the demon lord meant was that he had been worried.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, turning in his embrace. "It took the others longer than I thought to fall asleep."
Sesshoumaru rested his chin on the top of her head and felt her relax against him.
"It is okay," he said. "If you had disappeared, I would have found you." She tensed at that and pulled away slightly.
"Tomorrow, the Shikon no Tama will be completed," she said softly. "I'm afraid I'll be sent back to my time." Her eyes met his then, and he saw the fear there. She had told him not long after they had started meeting like this about how she traveled between the eras. There were 500 years separating them when she was gone, but she had always come back. "What if I can't get back? Will you find me then?" Sesshoumaru placed a finger beneath her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.
"I promise you that if I can, I find you in your time." They looked at one another for a moment before Sesshoumaru lowered his lips to her own. As they shared the tender moment, the snow began to fall around them.
:::end flashback:::
It had been three months since he had made that promise, and she had not seen a hint of him. She supposed he had died. After all, 500 years was a very long time to wait for someone.
So for three months, she had mourned the loss of the only person she had ever truly loved.
For a long while, she stayed out there, but for how long she did not know. She was deep in her own thoughts when a flash of white caught her attention.
Kagome turned, her heart fluttering madly, but it was only snow. It had begun to fall, and soon, it was heavy in the air, coating her shoulders.
"I should go inside," she said to what she thought was no one. When she got a response, she nearly jumped out of her skin.
"Or you cold stay out here and let me keep you warm." She turned, and saw a pale face she thought she had left in the past.
The End.
I know, it's short and kind of pointless, but I was feeling kind of angsty and sappy, and this is the product. R, r, & r. Thanks!
