The Big Suprise
Kagome missed him so much even though he'd only been gone for three months. She tried and tried to get ahold of him over video chat but it just hadn't worked out for some time. She sighed, guessing that she shouldn't be suprised. He was a general in the Japanese military forces so it only made sense that he was so busy. It's just that she was so excited, she wished more than anything that she could tell him in person. She sighed again, happily this time, as she rubbed her slightly bulging tummy. The doctors said that she'd been pregnant for nearly four months already. Strange that he hadn't sensed the change in her before he'd left.
But when she did acutally succeed in catching him, it was only for a few moments.
"Sesshomaru! Oh, I'm so glad I caught you. I miss you so much." Her smile broadened when his face appeared on her screen. Though it quickley diminished when his tired golden eyes met hers. "Oh, you look tired. Long day?" He nodded, giving his usual, 'hn' as a response.
"They have me training new recruits." He said in a bored tone. "Most of them have no idea what they are getting themselves into. They think it is some foolish game of theirs. They act like idiotic children." Kagome smiled at the opening.
"Speaking of which..." Suddenly, Sesshomaru was looking off screen as Kagome heard what sounded like a door bursting open.
"General Taisho, there is a fight breaking out in the mess hall."
"Very well." He said wearily. Turning back to his wife, he said, "I'm sorry, Kagome. I will try to call you tomorrow."
"Oh, ok." She sighed, defeated. "Love you." Again he nodded and her screen went blank. 'Oh well.' She thought. 'Might as well get some shut eye. Maybe I can tell him tomorrow.'
But he never called. Instead she'd gotten a brief email saying that his platoon was being shipped to another encampment and that he would be away from his computer for near a month. He loved her and would email or call her as soon as possible. That night, Kagome cried herself to sleep, clutching her stomach.
***5 Weeks Later
"Oh, Sesshomaru, thank the gods! I was so worried."
"Did you assume I would fall in combat?" Kagome laughed. He'd always had a strange way of talking sometimes but she'd come to expect it from him. After all, he was a demon. Though he'd never really told her his age she expected that he was nearly 1000 years old or so by now. She often wondered why he'd chosen her as a mate. She would have assumed that he would have no inerest in a human because they would seem immature or fragile. But, he'd taken her as his, and she'd happily agreed to be his mate. They had been together for nearly 50 years and were very happy.
"No, Sess. I just hadn't heard from you in so long. I was worried you'd found yourself someone else over there and had run off with her." She joked. His eyes narrowed.
"Foolish." She sighed under her breath. He never could take a joke.
"So, anyway, I have something really exciting to---" She stopped talking, when she'd noticed that the scowl never left his face. "Sess? Something wrong? Sess? Sesshomaru?" She screeched and threw her hands in the air. "Damn this computer! Damn this internet! Damn! Damn!! DAMN!!!" For what ever reason, her computer had frozen. And then, the screen blinked and it's life cut short. She growled so feircly, that even Sesshomaru might have been proud of her. "That's it! I'm going to beat the life out of Miroku for selling me this peice of junk!" She stood up, snatched up her purse and stormed out the door. She had to pick up more orange juice and pickles anyway.
***1 Week Later
New computer on the desk and all the proper programs were downloaded, she dialed and held her breath. His face appeared on her screen. Oh, how she missed him. She wished desperatly that she could kiss him.
"Sesshomaru, are you able to talk now?" She said, hopefully. He gave a slight nod.
"I am on leave for the day." She clapped her hands together once and winked her eye.
"Great! Because I have some wond---"
"General Taisho!" Came another voice from his end of the computer. Kagome's face grew red. "The Commander would like to speak with you." Sesshomaru nodded, and Kagome bit her lip.
"Kagome, I-"
"Yea, yea. You're sorry but you have to go." She snapped. "Fine. Love you, bye." And she slammed her finger down on the escape button. Why couldn't she tell him?! Was she just not meant to?! Why were the gods so mean to her like this?
**2 Months Later
Kagome had tried and tried to tell him but always something had gotten in they way. Another commander wanted to speak with him. A fight broke out. The list felt endless. At one point she had even stood up infront of the lap top but, he had been so exhausted he'd fallen asleep sitting at his desk. With a high pitched scream, she closed out the window and stalked off to their room. She was so close to her due date, and she still hadn't been able to tell him.
Sesshomaru had noticed strange behaviors in his mate. Though at first he assumed that it was because they had not had much time to talk. He also noticed that she was gaining weight. Perhaps she had been eating more, in a fit of depression since he was gone. But his Kagome had always been in shape. It was one thing that drew him to her. She took care of herself. She did not stink like the other humans. She was well groomed, hygenic, and sanitary. Why would she let herself go like this? He mentally shrugged. Perhaps when he returned she would resume her workout routine soon after and regain her physical health. He did not want his mate to fall ill to anything that could harm her mentally or physically. Perhaps he would email her tomorrow when she had calmed down, and ask her about it. Then his wife's voice rang in his head.
"It's not polite to ask a woman her age or her weight." She had snapped, when he'd asked how old she was before they had become a mated pair. He never could understand her logic. He had only wanted to make sure that she was of legal age. Not that it'd do much harm, but he didn't feel like dealing with the human police for "robbing the cradel" as Kagome had so colorfully put it. He yawned, something he only did in private, where no one could see, and stretched out on his cot for a night of sleep.
***1 1/2 Months Later
Sesshomaru was furious. He had just been shipped to another encampment again. To train unworthy, ungrateful, little whelps how to shoot a gun properly. Again. Obviously these humans did not learn the first time around. They had to be retaught every so often. He chalked it up the their inferior brain power and moved on to his room. He opened his laptop determined to email his wife, letting her know that he was ok and that he'd be able to come home soon. He fully expected to see his inbox full of letters and missed chat lines from Kagome. But, he'd only gotten one. How odd. Normally she'd blow up his computer with her needless worrying and constant, I love you's and I miss you's. His heart pounded his chest for a fraction of a moment. What if something had happened to her? What if... He narrowed his eyes. No. She was fine. She understood what his job entailed. He clicked on the emboldened words, "Very Important, Please Read ASAP". He almost expected to read a long email about how he never called, or never wrote, or how things were with her and their friends. But to his suprise he recieved only three words.
"Come Home Soon."
He stood, slamming his laptop shut so hard, he heard the screen crack. He didn't care though. He could afford a new one. Right now, he had to get home.
***At Home
It had been three days since he had gotten the email and had to push the paperwork through the proper chanels. He had threatened to just leave but his commmander had warned him that he would be considered AWOL and would be courtmarshalled when he was caught. He had growled but conceded. Imagine. He a great demon bowing his head to human rules. His mate needed him.
At last he was there, somewhat worn out from his trip but he could not afford to sleep now. He had to find Kagome. He burst through the front door, his nose on full alert. She had not been here for quite some time. However, he picked up another scent. Her mother had come here, and her brother. From the smell of it, they had stayed a few days. Perhaps she had gotten lonely and had gone to her mothers. He shrugged and turned to leave when another scent had caught his attention. Just underlying Kagome's scent. It was everywhere. And it was male. He growled. Had Kagome cheated on him while he was away? He had always thought her an honorable woman. Trust worthy. Was he wrong? He was just about to storm out of the house when a slip of paper taped to the door caught his eye. It smelled of Kagome's mother and was written in a hand he knew was not his mate's.
"Kagome is at the hospital."
All thoughts of unfaithfulness were pushed to the back of his mind and he used his demon speed to rush to the hospital. Stopping at the desk he asked the nurse where his mate was.
"Name?"
"Taisho."
"Taisho... Taisho... Oh, yes. Room 206. Recovery." The nurse looked up to find him no where in sight.
He didn't even bother with the elevator. At this rate, the stairs would be faster. Bursting out of the stairwell, he searched for room 206, finding it easily. Kagome's scent was heavy. And there was that male's scent again. Stronger this time. His anger returning, he was prepared to fight off the male and then break the bonds between his mate and he. He would not be made a fool of. Placing a mask of death and hatred on his face he walked into the room. A whole new scent hit him in the face like a ton of bricks.
His. His own scent was already there. But how was that possible.
"Sesshomaru." Kagome said, beaming from her bed. He looked to her, slightly confused. She was covered in blankets and a large bundle lay on her chest. He looked around. The room was empty aside from Kagome's mother.
"I'll give you two some privacy." She said happily. "Kagome, I'll bring you some lunch. Sesshomaru, would you like anything?"
"No. Thank you, honored mother." He said formally. Mrs. Higurashi sighed. He'd never loosened up around her. Oh well. She smiled to herself as she walked out the door.
"Kagome." Sesshomaru said, icily. "Explain why you are here and what is this strange scent?" Kagome looked confused. "I smell another male. You have been unfaithful." Now, Kagome's anger rose to the top in the blink of an eye. He prepared his ears for the screeching he knew was to come. But she suprised him.
"I have not been unfaithful, Sesshomaru." She snapped, quietly. "I have been trying to tell you for months now but I had never gotten the chance. You never answered my emails and everytime we skyped we were interrupted."
"Tell me what?"
"I was pregnant, Sess." Her voice softened, and the anger in her voice was replaced with one of love. She moved a blanket to reveal an infant that looked just like Sesshomaru, suckling at her breast. The infant had fine silver hair and a blue crescent moon that sat gracefully in the middle of his forehead but no magenta stripes. The infant had Kagome's blue eyes. Sesshomaru found that that suited the boy. "Sesshomaru, I want you to meet our son, Toga." Kagome looked into Sesshomaru's eyes and had to keep herself from gaping at him. A new spark was now there. She could almost see the walls he had around his heart start to crumble. He moved to sit next to her on the bed.
"Toga." He said quietly as he caressed the childs tiny head. "My son." He then looked to Kagome. She seemed to glow from with in. Motherhood was going to suit her. Then, guilt, something he'd never felt at all hit him like a ton of bricks. "Kagome... I-"
"It's ok." She said smiling wider. "I guess I can't blame you for thinking that way. After all," She paused and her smile turned mischeivious. "I am one sexy little minx." She giggled and he glared at her before kissing her.
His mate. His odd, quirky, little mate, and his son and heir.
At last. The demon's heart was thawing and his walls were crumbling.
