The birth of a Yuki-onna

 ...

There is a legend around these parts

about a woman in white.

It tells a story of broken hearts

where love was destroyed by fright.

The end is where the beginning starts

as it is shown to the light.

 ...

As the bitter chill of winter blew

the blizzard in from the East

and the depth of the falling snow grew,

churning winds a howling beast,

the girl walked miles more than a few;

frozen ice her only feast.

 ...

Destination though too far to reach,

she had no choice but to go.

The will to go on she did beseech,

wandering through the cold snow.

Her home no more than a sandless beach;

whose high tide was far too low.

 ...

Step by step she wandered further still,

her fingers numb to the bone.

She knew she must keep going until

her passed mistakes she could own.

Enough regret for a lake to fill,

but no one to hear her moan.

 ...

The warmth from the sun was gone for now

and the moon gave no reprieve.

Though her trespasses it did allow,

its grace was meant to deceive.

With but lips to speak it would avow

its own goal it would achieve.

 ...

As she walked her heat was fading fast,

though her ire, it was growing.

She knew she could not escape her past,

seeds of discord left sowing.

If they but learn, they would be aghast,

of the stones she was throwing.

 ...

Secrets she swore to take to the grave

were soon to be spilling out.

Betrayals, lies, sins that would deprave

soon too would be known about.

Even after everything she gave

they had shown her not but doubt.

 ...

To save themselves they had all outed her

as a woman of the night.

In doing so, her wrath they did spur

a waiting blaze to ignite.

Much too late, they have realized their err

too late to escape their plight.

 ...

Her plan she had set about before

heading off into the snow.

Though the town now knew she was a whore

this was not her lowest low.

No warning of what she had in store

for them was she gonna show.

 ...

By now the village would be ablaze

each home soaked to burn brightly.

It mattered not who it was that prays

pleas from all now unsightly.

All would suffer now for those betrays

her wrath did not come lightly.

 ...

It was not their lives that she would take

but their homes she would destroy.

She would see they paid for their mistake

and their pain she would enjoy.

For her trust that they all did forsake

they would be her ruined toy.

 ...

It was not just her to get her way

something wanted her in hell.

She did not know this was her last day,

no chance given for farewell,

or that fate would have the final say

as midnight rung her death knell.

 ...

Her last few steps, though she did not know

had passed before she could blink.

Blood, ice now, no longer did it flow

death no longer at the brink.

Her last breath, she pursed her lips to blow

then there was no more to think.

 ...

From where she stood she fell to the ground

her heart no longer beating.

It would be spring before she was found

when Winter was retreating.

Temporary was her first grave mound

as melting snow was fleeting.

 ...

As she collapsed, her soul did not rise

up to heaven as it should.

All that is promised when someone dies

seems it was misunderstood.

Everything she expected was lies

though the knowledge did no good.

 ...

Rising up, she stood before herself

a footless ghost looking down.

Body more translucent than clear delph

her pale face marred by a frown.

With her humanity on a shelf

she turned and headed for town.

 ...

A woman in white she had become

her hair now matching her dress.

To her vengeance they would soon succumb

and their sins they would confess.

Turning her back on where she was from

soon to relish in distress.

 ...

Through the heavy snow she made her way

a cruel smile on her face.

Long before her body would decay

she would put them in their place.

Her new plan for them would cause dismay

leaving them all in disgrace.

 ...

With each step her heart turned blacker still

no more the girl she had been.

Soon she would give off an undead shrill

their fear causing her to grin.

Each eerie cry brought their heart a chill

echoing every last sin.

 ...

From the hill overlooking the town

she opened her mouth to shout.

An icy blast from her lips went down

causing power to go out.

In the snow she let everyone drown

cutting off their escape route.

 ...

Vengeance is sweet when it is served cold

and the prey is unaware.

When no warning was ever foretold

no time for them to prepare.

To a demon their sins have been sold

each with their own cross to bear.

 ...

Human statues counted one by one

but soon she found one missing.

It would seem her work was not yet done

no time for reminiscing.

"Silly boy there is no where to run,"

her search commenced while hissing.

 ...

This boy she sought, she knew him quite well

as he had been her first love.

No longer was she under his spell,

he could be gotten rid of.

On the past she could no longer dwell

time now to take off the glove.

 ...

This boy she loved, it was him she knew

who truth to tell did behoove.

His actions, her wrath they did ensue

because they did not approve.

Once she caught the boy she did pursue

each one's head she would remove.

 ...

Her love, she had given him it all

when he said he did not mind.

Her job, he swore it did not appall

and that love was truly blind.

But truth will eventually befall

even those that fate entwined.

 ...

Catching sight of her prey, she quickened

closing the distance between.

As she grew closer, her blood thickened

anticipating the scene.

Upon seeing her he looked sickened

not knowing what it could mean.

 ...

"More than the others you have betrayed

leading me to become this.

Now there is none to come to your aid

and lead you back to your bliss.

You must lay in this bed you have made

and this shall be your last kiss."

 ...

Her lips parted to breath ice once more

but something there made her pause.

This was the man that she did adore

had loved even with his flaws.

Taking his life would strike to the core

like cutting her down with claws.

 ...

Whisper light her fingers touched his cheek

as her hardened eyes turned soft.

"It seems loving you has made me weak,

though to my love you have scoffed.

Without you my future will be bleak,

I can not send you aloft."

 ...

Silently the boy could only stand there

unsure of what he should say.

Watching as she lay her heart to bare

wishing he could run away.

He could not admit that he did care

what she did was not okay.

 ...

He could not tell her he loved her still

because he could not forget.

The woman he knew could never kill;

take a life without regret.

Another's pain should not bring a thrill

this was not Russian roulette.

 ...

Not trusting the words to pass his lips

the boy remained still as stone.

His heart must now be as an eclipse;

ice flowing down to the bone.

And now it must be torn into strips;

the only love he had known.

 ...

With nothing left now, he turned around

never telling her the truth.

Facing her he could not make a sound

without coming off uncouth.

Too weak he had been to stand his ground;

protect the love of his youth.

 ...

With each step took away, his heart broke

piece by tiny, shattered piece.

His feelings he hid beneath a cloak

hoping she would be at peace.

She disappeared in a puff of smoke

whispering "You, I release."

 ...

Into the cold night she disappeared

never to see him again.

With their lives, Fate's cruel plans interfered

altering what might have been.

It came true, everything she had feared

when she committed her sin.

 ...

There is a legend around these parts
