Love Letters to an Assassin

Sesshomaru had just finished up after eliminating his latest target. He always made sure he left no trace of his target behind and that there were no witnesses. He picked up the phone and contacted his employer. “It is done. Target eliminated.”

“Excellent. That will be all for now. Your payment will be deposited into your account. Go home and get some rest. I shall inform you of your next target within a week.”

“Very well.” The call ended with that. Sesshomaru headed to his car and drove into town. He parked and walked towards a quaint little coffee shop.

It was a busy day at the coffee shop and Kagome Higurashi was being run ragged with so many orders. It was difficult to keep track of them all; lattes, frappuccinos, cappuccinos, regular coffees, soy lattes, chai lattes, and everything else in between. Kagome regretted ever leaving home to move into the city andafter about a month, she moved back home. Being a barista was starting to take its toll on her. She thought the day would get worse until the latest customer stepped in.

Unlike many of the businessmen that came in and out of the shop, this one was perfection personified; tall, rather muscular, with flowing silver hair, maroon double stripes on each cheek, piercing golden eyes, and an indigo crescent moon adorning his forehead. The bulk of his muscle didn’t take away any of the grace he possessed. He moved like a dancer as he headed to the counter. Kagome’s eyes followed his every graceful move as he approached her.

She shook her head from her self-imposed trance. “Welcome to The Java Joint. May I take your order?”

“Hmm, what would you recommend?”

Even his voice was perfect. “Um, well, I would recommend something like one of our flavored coffees or lattes. Our vanilla flavor is one of our popular flavors for both. Or if you want to go over the top, I’d recommend our cappuccinos.”

“Hmm, get me a medium vanilla latte then.”

“Very well, sir. A medium vanilla latte coming up.” Sesshomaru watched as Kagome prepared his order. For a human, she was very attractive with her full dark hair tied back, porcelain skin. She wasn’t too thin, or too thick. He was sure that she had a nice figure underneath her uniform.

Sesshomaru’s order was ready. “Here you go, sir. Enjoy your medium vanilla latte.” He nodded his thanks as he started to sip on his latte. It tasted pretty good for one who didn’t regularly drink coffee or anything with coffee in it. He continued to watch her as she prepared another customer’s order.

Several minutes, Kagome focused her attention on Sesshomaru. “How do you like the latte, sir?”

“I enjoyed the latte very much. How much do I owe you?”

“That will be $2.50.”

Sesshomaru was a bit surprised at the price of the latte, however, it was small change to him. Little did anyone know that he made large amounts of money with his line of work. He took out a 5-dollar bill and waited for his change.

As Kagome gave him his change, she couldn’t help but stare into Sesshomaru’s eyes. He was quite fascinated with her blue eyes, which were very rare for a typical Japanese woman. Perhaps, she had some European ancestry as well.

“Thank you, sir. Have a good day.”

Sesshomaru nodded and headed out the door. Kagome noticed something fall out of his pocket as he left. She went to pick it up and it turned out to be his license with his name and address. She was about to stop him and return it to him. However, he was too quick for her to catch up to him. The only thing she could do was hold onto it and hope that he would return to retrieve it. Or she could do something that she would never consider doing: write a letter. The most difficult part was how to begin.

As he entered his penthouse apartment uptown, Sesshomaru removed his coat and checked his pockets. He realized that he couldn’t find his license anywhere. A growl of frustration rumbled from his chest as he looked everywhere for it. He realized that it must have fallen out of his pocket at the coffee shop. Sesshomaru realized that it was a bit late for him to return to the coffee shop. He’d return to the coffee shop tomorrow. Why not relieve that stress with some meditation.

It was the end of the day and it was Kagome’s turn to close up shop. She made sure to put the license in her bag before she headed home. As she took the train home, Kagome thought of ways to begin her letter. She also wondered if he would write back when he got it. He probably wouldn’t. She sighed as she entered her house and headed to her bedroom after greeting her family. Of course, dinner would have to wait until she got this letter out.

Kagome was fortunate to have found some paper for her letter. It was a shame people didn’t write letters anymore with emails and text messages. She found letter-writing to be quite nostalgic. ‘All right, let’s get this started.’

Kagome read the letter and was satisfied with it when she finished. Wrapping Sesshomaru’s license with the letter, she found an envelope in her desk drawer. Luckily for her, she had some stamps in her purse and placed one on the envelope before writing Sesshomaru’s address on the front and her return address. Sealing the envelope, she placed it in her bag, ready to mail. Afterwards, she headed downstairs to the kitchen for dinner.

Dinner went on as usual, with Jii-chan going on and on with Kagome and taking up her duties at the shrine and her refusal to do so. Once again, Kagome stated that she was quite content with her job as a Java Joint barista. However, she was willing to help out on the weekends if she wished. Souta shook his head throughout the conversation. It wrapped up with Kagome and her mother clearing the dishes and placing them in the dishwasher. She then returned to her bedroom to watch a little television before going to bed.

Night came and went as the sun rose at the same time Kagome’s alarm clock rang. A half hour later, she was dressed in her uniform and ready to head towards the train station. She made sure that her letter was safely in her bag. After having breakfast, she said her goodbyes to her family and left. The ride to work was uneventful. Of course, the cars were crowded as usual. It wasn’t long before she reached her stop. As she walked down the block, Kagome bumped into a wall of flesh and quickly bowed. She almost fell backwards when strong masculine hands caught her. “Uh, I’m sorry I didn’t see you there.”

She looked up to see her mysterious silver-haired customer from yesterday, a blush forming on her cheeks. Instead of a suit, he was dressed quite casual; a sleeveless tunic revealing powerful arms adorned with double stripes at the wrists and fitted jeans, accentuating his leg muscles. “Oh, it’s you. I was going to mail this to you. You dropped your license on your way out. At least you saved me a trip to the mailbox.” Kagome then handed him the envelope.

Sesshomaru looked at the envelope as if he was uninterested. However, a part of him was quite curious. “Thank you for returning my license.”

“You’re welcome. Um, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be on my way. Drop by the coffee shop when you have time.” Kagome bowed once more and headed to the coffee shop.

“Very well. I shall drop by. I look forward to another of your creations.” Sesshomaru turned and headed to the park where he wanted to read the letter in peace. When he reached the park, the assassin found a bench and sat down to read the letter the woman wrote. He was very intrigued by her forwardness as he read:

Dear Sesshomaru,

I’m not sure where to begin. Ever since you stepped into the coffee shop, I was intrigued by you and I wanted to get to know you better. It’s not because of your looks. I’m not so shallow as that, though I have to admit that you’re perfection personified. I know that I don’t know you at all, but I’m sure a lot of females, youkai, hanyou, and human, think the same way. I, for one, can’t even reach your level. Who am I kidding? I don’t even come close. I’m just a regular human girl who works at a coffee shop as a barista; nothing special really. The only thing that makes me stand out is my eyes. That’s about it.

If you read this letter, you’d probably think I’m rambling on paper. But I think there’s more to you than just looks. I bet you could snag any female you wanted.

Anyway, I also wanted to let you that you dropped your license when you left. By the time I realized you dropped it, you were long gone. That’s how I learned your name. I also learned how quick you are for a youkai of your size. You don’t have to worry about me stalking you. I’m enclosing your license along with this letter. I wouldn’t want you to get into trouble if you were on the road.

Well, I don’t want to ramble on any further about my feelings. If you get this letter, I hope you read it before deciding what to do with it; whether you write back or throw it out. Honestly, I’m hoping you’d choose the first option.

Sincerely,

Kagome, the blue-eyed barista

‘So her name is Kagome. Interesting.’ When he finished, he made sure to put his license in his wallet and the letter in his rear pocket. Sesshomaru decided to write a response as soon as he returned home. With that, he unwittingly started something as decreed by Fate.

That’s it for the first chapter. I hope you enjoy it. There will definitely be more. Later. ^_^
