Humanly Possible by ProudHanyou

Verdant

Certain things don’t mix. Those were the words Sesshomaru lived by.

They just don’t make sense together, like fire and water, death and eternity or even humans and youkai. That situation is faded to failure, it just doesn’t work out. Right?

Right?

So why was he trying to convince himself?

Why was he absolutely miserable about the 700-year-old premise he took as a fact until… Until when?

It was the day after the funeral, if you can call that. Nobody cared about a halfwit hanyou. Or so he thought.

As tradition demands, he had to care for his brother’s death affairs.

‘Half brother.’ He corrected himself under his breath.

As he approached the little village in the skirts of her shrine, the place was dense with grief and a troublesome salt scent. He found Rin with the kitsune, they were always together, even in moments like these.

She had been crying as her companion in pain.

Sesshomaru decided he didn’t want to deal with an excruciatingly emotional girl in a melancholic state but fate, as it was a jestingly little thing, made sure his decision was barely symbolic.

As he found his path though the village, ready to set the ends of this assuredly boring day, he made a shocking discovery: Not everybody hated his brother. He scoffed amused.

‘Half-brother.’ He corrected again.

Following the fading scent of a half immortal life, Sesshomaru came to a halt near a sacred tree he knew to be Inuyasha’s prison for 50 years.

‘How comical,’ The demon thought, ‘Now this will be your prison forever.’

There he found a girl in a fairly indecent green garment. The air was thick with salt and a sweet lily scent.

“I brought out my old uniform.” He watched her talk to a specific spot on the ground.

“Remember how I used to fight all kinds of demons in this skirt?” She chuckled, sniffing.

The stoic demon paused searching for the container of her attention.

“Why did you have to leave, you moron?” Kagome asked, looking at the bed of tiny clovers that grew at her best friend’s final resting place.

“I miss you so much, you asshole” A painful sob left her.

Thoroughly intrigued, Sesshomaru took one more step in her direction.

The miko stopped mid-sob and raised her head without turning.

“You’re late.” She accused dryly.

Sesshomaru was taken aback for a second, he was not accustomed to being detected or even confronted at that.

“He would still be dead yesterday.” He responded nonchalantly.

The only thing he heard in response was a hurt, almost inaudible gasp.

‘So much for not dealing with excruciatingly emotional girls.’ He scoffed internally.

She finally turned, her deep cerulean eyes were coated by a heavy shade of pain.

“He was right about not wanting you here.” Kagome spit.

“You care only for yourself. The great Sesshomaru-sama would definitely not bother to help a human village, even the village where his ward lives.” She said with hurt.

Being a daiyoukai, Sesshomaru was used to people using a respectful honorific as his status mandated, curiously when that honorific left her mouth he felt affronted.

Why did he care about what a human miko had to say about him?

“He was trying to protect your daughter, you stuck up snob.”  She closed the distance between them.

“This Sesshomaru asked for nothing, he did it on his own accord.” He threw back looking down on her.

“This Sesshomaru does not need a lowly hanyou aid, it could be taken care of without him.” The demon concluded.

“But did you? It seems to me you left your ward without protection, now he is dead, and I'm left with a shredded fire rat robe.” Tears began to fall down her swollen face.

A light breeze passed between them, moving the grass and impregnating the place with the salty lily scent.

Letting out a displeased huff, Sesshomaru contemplated the idea of being in debt with the departed. It was a very unsatisfactory feeling.

“Why did you care so much for him? He was not human, youkai neither. He didn’t belong to my world or yours.” He inquired, nothing but legit curitosity in his expression.

If the turbulent temper behind her eyes was any indication of what was about to come, he would be out for some fun.

He heard her exhale.

“You’re right. He didn’t belong to your world, much less mine.” She agreed angrily.

“That made him worthy of both.” The miko completed.

At that moment the demon lord caught himself asking what was so precious about a friendship with a half-breed.

Pulled back from his thoughts, he watched her nearing the spot he stood on.

Kagome was about to walk pass him but paused.

“You knew nothing about him. This is your fault. Remember that.” Her face contorted with rage as she continued to walk to the village.

For him, it was simple, humans and youkai should not mix.

Should not.

He turned to watch the woman leaving Inuyasha’s forest.

‘Huh.’ Sesshomaru observed intrigued.
